The flywheel effect applies as much to social and family relationships as it does at work. Everything we say or do in dealing with others has a role in spinning the other person’s inner flywheel for better or worse.

We have it within our control to have them walk away from us feeling good about themselves and us, or to be so bothered by our actions or words that they distance themselves from us or anyone else they may subsequently interact with. How we use the power we have in the workplace will determine the relationships we enjoy.

In that respect, flywheel spin is a measure of how we feel toward one another. When our relationship is going strong and regular, we have an “I’m OK, You’re OK” feeling.

If, on the other hand, one criticizes, finds fault or disagrees sharply or tersely with the other then their spinning strength may slow and leave them with a negative energy flow; that is, with a sense they haven’t enough strength to do what has to be done.

When tempted to treat someone in an unfriendly way, to make snide remarks, or berate them, it would be better to stop for a moment and visualize what we are doing to the flywheel deep inside them.

See how this criticism and lack of care will impact their internal spinning force and their flow of positive energy. Seeing that picture in your head will most likely help you modify your reaction.
